Moving from Speed Dial (speed-dial.net) to Tabdial

Checked with Speed Dial version 1.1.9 on September 30, 2026

In short: the Speed Dial extension from speed-dial.net saves your dials to a file named export.spd. Open that file in Tabdial. It takes a couple of minutes, needs no account, and brings your groups, titles and logos along.

Many extensions are called Speed Dial. This page is for the one made by speed-dial.net. Using another one? See the guides for Speed Dial 2, FVD Speed Dial and Group Speed Dial.

Save your dials from Speed Dial

Do this before you install Tabdial. Chrome shows only one new tab extension at a time, and the one installed last wins.

  1. Open a new tab, so Speed Dial shows your dials.
  2. Click the gear button in the top-right corner. Speed Dial's Settings page opens.
  3. In the list on the left, click Import/Export.
  4. Click Save to file. Chrome saves a file named export.spd to your Downloads folder.

Already installed Tabdial? Open chrome://extensions, switch Tabdial off, do the steps above, then switch Tabdial back on.

Open the file in Tabdial

  1. Install Tabdial from the Chrome Web Store. If Chrome asks whether you meant to change your new tab page, choose to keep the change.
  2. Open a new tab and click Settings in the top-right corner.
  3. Under Your data, click Import a file and choose export.spd.
  4. Tabdial tells you how many dials it imported. Click Done and check your groups.

Importing adds to what is already in Tabdial and never deletes anything. Dials you already have are skipped, so importing the same file twice is harmless.

What comes along

What doesn't

Afterwards

When your dials look right in Tabdial, you can remove Speed Dial from chrome://extensions. Keep export.spd if you like; it is your own copy.
