Moving from Group Speed Dial to Tabdial

Checked with Group Speed Dial version 29.3 on September 30, 2026

In short: save a backup file from Group Speed Dial, then open it in Tabdial. It takes a couple of minutes. You don't need a Group Speed Dial account or its paid plan, and your groups, titles and website dials come along.

Save your dials from Group Speed Dial

Do this before you install Tabdial. Chrome shows only one new tab extension at a time, and the one installed last wins.

  1. Open a new tab, so Group Speed Dial shows your dials.
  2. Click the menu button (three lines) in the top-right corner, then History / Backup.
  3. At the top of the window that opens, click Backup/restore settings to file. Group Speed Dial's Import / Backup page opens.
  4. Click Export settings and dials. Chrome saves a file named like backup_2026_09_30___14_05_12.group_speed_dial to your Downloads folder.

Want your thumbnails too? Click Export all instead. Group Speed Dial first asks for permission to manage your downloads; allow it. That file also holds the pictures of your dials, and Tabdial reads them.

Already installed Tabdial? Open chrome://extensions, click Details under Group Speed Dial, then Extension options, open Import / Backup and continue from step 4.

Open the file in Tabdial

  1. Install Tabdial from the Chrome Web Store. If Chrome asks whether you meant to change your new tab page, choose to keep the change.
  2. Open a new tab and click Settings in the top-right corner.
  3. Under Your data, click Import a file and choose the .group_speed_dial file.
  4. Tabdial tells you how many dials it imported. Click Done and check your groups.

If Tabdial says the backup is encrypted, turn off encryption in Group Speed Dial, export again and import the new file.

Importing adds to what is already in Tabdial and never deletes anything. Dials you already have are skipped, so importing the same file twice is harmless.

What comes along

What doesn't

Afterwards

When your dials look right in Tabdial, you can remove Group Speed Dial from chrome://extensions. Keep the backup file if you like; it is your own copy.
