Moving from FVD Speed Dial to Tabdial

In short: FVD Speed Dial doesn't save a file. It gives you a block of text, which you copy and paste into Tabdial. It takes a couple of minutes, needs no account, and brings your groups, titles and thumbnails along.

Copy your dials from FVD Speed Dial

Do this before you install Tabdial. Chrome shows only one new tab extension at a time, and the one installed last wins.

1. Open a new tab, so FVD Speed Dial shows your dials.
2. In the toolbar at the top right, click the gear button (Global options). FVD's options page opens.
3. On the Main tab, find the Import/Export box and click Export.
4. In the Export window, click Copy to Clipboard.

Use the button rather than selecting the text yourself: the text holds your thumbnails, so it can be more than a megabyte long.

The window warns that this kind of backup won't save your custom images and suggests FVD's online backup extension. You don't need that for Tabdial. The copied text does include your thumbnails, including images you uploaded, and Tabdial reads them.

Already installed Tabdial? Open chrome://extensions, click Details under FVD Speed Dial, then Extension options, and continue from step 3.

5. Install Tabdial from the Chrome Web Store. If Chrome asks whether you meant to change your new tab page, choose to keep the change.
6. Open a new tab and click Settings in the top-right corner.
7. Under Your data, click Moving from FVD Speed Dial? Paste its export text.
8. Click in the box, paste (Ctrl+V, or ⌘V on a Mac), then click Import pasted text.
9. Tabdial tells you how many dials it imported. Click Done and check your groups.

You copied something else in the meantime? Go back to FVD's Export window and click Copy to Clipboard again. You can also paste the text into a plain text file and open that file with Import a file.

Importing adds to what is already in Tabdial and never deletes anything. Dials you already have are skipped, so pasting the same text twice is harmless.

What comes along

• Groups, in the same order, with their names.
• Dials, in the order you arranged them.
• Titles, including ones you renamed. Dials you never named get the page title FVD found.
• Thumbnails: automatic page pictures, pictures from an image link, and images you uploaded from your computer.

FVD Speed Dial comes with a few sponsored dials, such as Amazon and Booking.com, which open through partner links. Tabdial imports them as plain links to the site itself. Delete any you don't want.

What doesn't

• The Popular group, Most visited and Recently closed. FVD builds these from your browsing history, so they aren't in the export. Tabdial can add your most visited sites as dials instead: Settings, then Add most visited sites.
• Look and layout: the 3D style, themes, backgrounds, fonts and dial size. Set yours in Tabdial's Settings.
• Everything else FVD keeps: click counts, the list of blocked sites, the password lock, widgets and your EverSync account.

Afterwards

When your dials look right in Tabdial, you can remove FVD Speed Dial from chrome://extensions.
